When Usury is mentioned in a conversation, we often hear that it is forbidden and unacceptable in the Islamic economic system, but what are the economic effects of usury? Is the issue of usury limited to religious prohibition? On the other side, we see some people touching and pointing out that this prohibition is a purely religious prohibition, and they see that there is some unreality in it, because the capitalist economic system is mainly based on usury, which is called interest and is an essential component of the production process.
In this article we will convey a different viewpoint, where we will show the economic effects of usury, we will also mention the point of economists about usury and its impact on the economic system.
What is Usury?
Usury is a conditional increase on the asset of money in exchange for the postponement of paying back, and here the money does not participate in any risk because it is guaranteed by the borrower, in addition to a guaranteed increase in the amount in exchange for the borrower’s use of the money.
In simple terms, usury is to lend a sum of money and pay a greater amount than it at the time of payment. We point out that the sin does not apply on only the one who suggested the increase, whether the lender or the borrower suggested it.
However, this lending involves a set of economic impacts of interest that negatively affect the economy as a whole.
Example of clarification:
Saeed loaned Khalil 5 thousand dollars for a period of six months, provided that he returned the amount in addition to an additional 1,000 dollars, and thus he would borrow 5 thousand and pay 6 thousand!
Another example: When the time came for Khalil to pay the money, he did not have the money, so he asked Saeed to give him an additional month, so Saeed required him to increase the amount by an additional 500 dollars.
