Asics' Gel Venture series of trail shoes is the company's entry-level offering. It's intended to be used as a daily trainer for individuals looking for high-performance trail running in a tried-and-true package.
The Dynaflyte range of Asics sneakers is for people who require more speed and less trail.
Although the Gel Venture is well-suited for off-road use, Asics produces a high-end trail shoe called the GT-2000 8 Trail that shares many of the same qualities as the Gel Venture but includes more technology (FLYTEFOAM, DYNAMIC DUOMAX) in a more expensive ($150) package.
The previous generation of the Gel Venture had an almost identical outsole, midsole, and upper. The midsole alterations were primarily cosmetic, with little impact on functionality.
The top has been updated with a new lacing mechanism and a few minor design tweaks. However, in the same colour, both variants appear to be nearly identical.
This was my first time wearing Asics trail running shoes, so I was eager to see how they fit. Everything was well-tightened, and the first thing I noticed was a sturdy outsole that was ready for the trails.
Solid construction, little flexibility, and excellent grip. The shoes felt suitable for a longer trail run after my first run around the Charles River Esplanade.
I started out on a 50-mile test run to evaluate how well the shoes held up.
An 8-mile trail run/hike in the White Mountains of New Hampshire was the shoe's first meaningful test.
I found it to be rock solid for the majority of the route, with only minor slipping on sandy rock surfaces, as is typical of most trail shoes.
The outsole's rubber covering made it simple to grip the path, yet the thicker stacks meant you didn't feel as connected to the trail as you would with Merrell Glove shoes.
I was thrilled after finishing this first test trail run because the shoes held up well and I had no difficulties on my feet.
Just a tad sweatier than usual, but we'll go into that later in the shoe review.
